The Spanish economy continues growing, with construction dynamic performance in the spotlight, whose GVA climbed in Q118 at a pace not seen since 2001 –primarily fuelled by the strength of the residential segment–, though still far from its pre-crisis record highs.

Spain / High mortality rate and small size of businesses drag on improvements in productivity and efficiency

Despite the improvement in macro data over the last few years (GDP has risen by 13% and employment –EPA– 12.1% from its lows), the consequences of the crisis on the destruction of Spain’s business base still remain. Although the number of companies has increased over the last three years, the average size is still very limited: almost 96% have less than 10 employees, a percentage which is higher than that before the crisis broke out and that of neighbouring countries. This implies greater difficulties for accessing financing, innovating and improving productivity and competitiveness.

Towards the back end of 2017, the service sector regained the ground lost in previous months, off the back of an uptick in transport and commercial activities. Passenger and cargo traffic figures rose at a faster rate. Growth in the construction sector continued to gain speed throughout the year especially in housing, while the public works segment also rebounded.

Spain / Labour market ends 2017 with the largest job creation figures since 2005

Spain ended 2017 with 611,146 more employed people, a notable improvement from previous four years registers. Social Security affiliates rose 3.4% to 18.46 million. Labour market’s performance over the year was better than expected at the start of 2017, what anticipates that GDP growth will be like 2016 growth rate. After a loss of momentum in the 3Q17, the performance over the last few months of the year would point to a renewed dynamism in activity. -
Sectoral Overview. June 2017

The latest available figures, especially regarding employment, indicate that the Spanish economy will have grown faster in the second quarter of the year, with a GDP growth of around 1.0% quarter-on-quarter (+0.8% previous quarter). This growth is also more balanced, fuelled by manufacturing investment and extremely buoyant exports.
